Weekly updates and Monthly HIV-AIDS reports

The Department routinely publishes reports on infectious diseases in Victoria. This page contains the Weekly Update (usually produced each week) and a HIV/AIDS summary (produced monthly).

Important - Data presented in these publications relate to notifications received by the Department and do not necessarily reflect the true incidence of the disease. The data presented are subject to change without notice.


Weekly updates

Weekly updates provide descriptive analysis by the Communicable Diseases Medical Epidemiologist of infectious disease data in Victoria. The reports should be read in conjunction with the daily tabulated reports.

2012

  • This week's update focuses on Hepatitis E virus (HEV), an enterically transmitted pathogen which causes acute hepatitis.

  • This week we focus on the bacterial gastrointestinal infection, Shigellosis. In Victoria, local outbreaks have occurred in child care centres, among men who have sex with men (MSM), and within geographic areas.

  • This week's focus is on Neisseria gonorrhoeae (gonococcal infection, gonorrhoea), a sexually transmissible infection. In Victoria year-to-date there have been 169 notifications of gonococcal infection, compared with 125 in 2011 and 106 in 2010.

  • This week we focus on Hepatitis A, a viral infection transmitted by the faeco-oral route, from person to person or via fomites.

  • The weekly infectious disease update for 3 January 2012 focuses on Chlamydia. Chlamydia is a bacterial sexually transmissible infection caused by Chlamydia trachomatis and is the most commonly reported notifiable disease in Australia.

2011

  • The weekly infectious disease update for 20 December 2011 focuses on Legionnaires disease (legionellosis), an uncommon but important cause of pneumonia in Victoria, with approximately 30 to 60 cases notified annually.

  • The weekly update for 13 December 2011 focuses on notified enteric disease outbreaks in Victoria for the month of November. There were no respiratory outbreaks identified during this month.

  • This week we focus on notified cases of Salmonella. Salmonellosis is a commonly notified condition caused by a large number of different serotypes of organisms belonging to the Salmonella species of gram negative enteric pathogens

  • This week we focus on malaria. Malaria should be considered in any febrile patient with a history of travel in malaria endemic areas. Early treatment is essential to prevent complications. In Victoria so far this year there have been 85 notifications.

  • This week we focus on Q fever, a zoonotic disease carried by wild and domestic animals. Abattoir workers, shearers, animal farm workers and others with direct contact with animals are most at risk. Vaccination is available.

  • This week we focus on measles. Small outbreaks of measles continue to occur in Victoria following importation of measles from overseas. In Victoria in 2011 year to date there have been 34 confirmed cases of measles.

  • This week we focus on psittacosis. Psittacosis can be caught from birds such as parrots and cockatoos. Bird owners, pet shop workers, and poultry workers are at risk. Fourty to sixty cases are notified in Victoria annually.

  • This week we focus on tuberculosis. The majority of notifications of tuberculosis in Victoria are in people born overseas. However, the proportion in Australian born people is higher in older people.
