Summary

These guidelines help businesses comply with the Public Health and Wellbeing Regulations 2009 by providing information on infection control. The guidelines are designed around a risk management approach.

There is also information on some procedures that are not covered by the Public Health and Wellbeing Regulations.

The guidelines refer to the previous Regulations and are currently being updated. Businesses can continue to use the current version in the meantime

Contents

The guidelines are divided into the following five parts.

Part A: Infection control, legislative requirements, occupational health and safety issues, and how to clean, disinfect and sterilise instruments and equipment..

Part B: Industry specific information

The Department of Helath, together with the Chinese Medicine Registration Board, is developing separate infection control guidelines for acupuncture. Existing departmental standards of practice for acupuncture are to be followed until the review is completed.

Part C: General information on risk analysis and management, to assist proprietors and operators to develop policies and procedures to improve infection control and prevention practices. Appendix 2 contains risk analysis tables with examples.

Health information sheets for clients

The Public Health and Wellbeing Regulations 2009 require proprietors of businesses undertaking skin penetration procedures (including tattooing and body piercing) to provide clients with information about the risks of infectious diseases before undertaking a procedure. The department has prepared health information sheets that proprietors can use.

There are also information sheets for other procedures that may present an infection risk.
